![]() ![]() One method I’ve read about is to soak ground-up charcoal with some fresh comfrey leaves until the mix smells swampy. Smaller-scale and more-sustainable methods include soil amendments like biochar, in which soluble nutrients are adsorbed onto the huge fractal surfaces of tiny lumps of charcoal. I also think it would also feed nitrate-forming bacteria a lot better, although chemical ag isn’t usually a good path toward a healthy soil ecosystem… This is clever because it’s less energy- and capital-intensive than making ammonium nitrate, it temporarily diverts CO2 that would otherwise just be vented, and it might potentially help crops whose growth is limited by access to atmospheric carbon. American synthetic fertilizers are heavy on ammonium nitrate (which can be diverted to military uses, and can also be used more rapidly in microbe-deficient soils), but Chinese agribusiness tends to rely more on ammonium carbonate. Oxalic acid has lots of other uses, too: it’s sold as a means of removing mineral deposits from plumbing (CLR is one brand name), and so I’ve wondered if a broth from oxalis and eggshells might be a treatment for blossom end rot.Įach oxalate radical can break down (via, e.g., fermentation) to form two molecules of carbon dioxide, which makes me wonder if it could be a useful component in fertilizer. If this form of oxalis doesn’t grow near you, other edible wood sorrels– or naturalized true sorrel–might. But its sour nature makes it unlikely that you could stomach enough to hurt you. They provide a bright, lemony note which is just wonderfully fresh and tasty with tender new lettuce–springtime in a bowl.Īs its true name, Oxalis, indicates, it is high in oxalic acid (as are many more common greens, like spinach), and (mandatory warning) oxalic acid should not be consumed in enormous quantities or if your physician has warned against it for some reason. The leaves, stems and flowers are all tasty, but for salads I just use the flowers and leaves. It packs a potent, lemony punch, like true sorrel, which makes it an excellent salad green, and that’s how I use it–raw, in salads. But I think its attractive–usually more attractive than whatever neglected patch of landscaping it has colonized. It’s true, it’s terribly persistent, because it spreads through underground bulbs. It’s a “weed” (Wikipedia describes it as a noxious weed and an invasive species) so if you look it up on the internet you’ll mostly find information on how to eradicate it. Here, it comes with the rain and vanishes with the heat. It originated in the Cape region of South Africa and is now found all over California, parts of Australia and probably other places as well. Burmuda buttercup, also known as sourgrass, soursop, African wood-sorrel and many other names, is a member of the wood-sorrel family. It’s Bermuda buttercup season in Los Angeles. If you have a dog or a child and you are receiving treatment for rodents, every precaution must be taken to prevent the animals and children for accessing the poison in the bait boxes. ![]() Once a case is opened, an inspector visits your property once a week until he or she feels that the pest control was effective and the job can be closed. If you know your tracking/reference number please let the inspector know when you call. If you think that you have bait boxes already installed on your property, please call the office and make an enquiry. If you were not home when an inspector installed bait boxes on your property, a notice and/or the inspector’s business card will be left in your mailbox to inform you that the boxes have been installed. If you are renting a property, discuss with your landlord prior to contacting Vector Control for service. You can purchase snap traps from the Vector Control office for $2.00 for mice and $5.00 for rats.Bait boxes aren’t available for general use only an inspector from Vector Control can install them. You must pay $15 per box, though the installation and assessment are free. The inspector will place bait boxes around the perimeter of your property to catch-and kill-the rats or mice. You will be given a pink tracking slip and a tracking number to check on the process. When you open a case with Vector Control: If you have a problem with rodents, call Vector Control. ![]()
